As parents, talking with our kids about cough medicine abuse is a crucial way to fight this problem. It is also important for kids to talk honestly amongst themselves about issues like over-the-counter drug abuse. I am in schools all the time, and I see first-hand how kids interact with each other. Recently, I've gotten involved with the Youth Advisory Leadership Group in my county. In this program, I am able to help guide 7th and 8th graders in their own discussions about drug abuse. An open forum for kids to talk with each other can bring a new dimension to the fight against cough medicine abuse. By opening up the lines of communication at home we can encourage kids to talk responsibly and factually among themselves.
