Good Tips

There’s a great post on Weary Parent, a support site for parents of teens and tweens, that gives several tips on preventing OTC drug abuse.

  • Set a good example. Carefully follow instructions on your medications.
  • Watch to see if your kids often go to the grocery store before going out with friends.
  • Check your teens room for empty medicine bottles.

Another part of the article discussed tips for recognizing cough medicine abuse in your own home. Signs to watch out for include:

  • Mood swings
  • Personality changes
  • Clumsiness
  • Drowsiness
  • Flushed skin

We have additional warning signs on FiveMoms.com. When it comes down to it, one of the best ways to recognize abuse is to see when your children are not acting like themselves. There’s no substitute for knowing your kids, and a great way to do that is to stay involved and talk with them about important issues.
