DXM Abuse on Cable TV

Recently, the discussion of cough medicine abuse has become more prevalent in mainstream media. There were the two studies released in the last month and both led to plenty of news stories, many of which we shared with you here at Five Moms. Cough medicine abuse also has become a part of several TV shows and reality documentaries on cable television. For example, in the first season of an HBO show, Big Love, one of the characters was confronted with a group of college students who were abusing cough medicine to get high. And, more recently, the A&E reality show Intervention featured Ben, a 22-year-old who had been abusing dextromethorphan, the active ingredient in cough medicine, for several years. The episode about Ben ran last week and talked about how much cough medicine he was taking: more than 15 times the recommended dose at one time to get high.
