Teens can learn about abusing dextromethorphan (DXM) online.
Unfortunately, many people share information about how to abuse DXM online. There are websites and online communities that promote the abuse of medicines containing DXM, through providing guides on how to achieve a high based on a user’s height and weight, how to combine it with other drugs, and what effects are to be expected at specific dosage levels. Specific websites to watch out for include:
- Erowid.org
- Reddit.com
Additionally, social media sites such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and X can make it all too easy for teens to share how and when they will abuse, their experiences while abusing, and different ways to do it.
How to Address Online Influences
Look closer.
You may want to do a quick online search for yourself and gain a better understanding of what teens can access.
Search terms include “robotripping,” “DXM,” or other slang terms.
Go to YouTube or Reddit, for example, and type in the keyword ‘DXM.’
Be aware.
If you are a parent, be on the look-out for packages that have been ordered from the Internet. Note the arrival of unexpected packages or payments by credit card or PayPal or other online payment site/apps. Pay attention to the sites your teen visits and make note of any unusual online activity.
Get Informed.
Visit WhatIsDXM.com with your teen and watch their videos for graphic, credible information on DXM abuse. Talk to your teenagers about what they’re seeing on the site.
