Today, roughly one out of three teenagers knows someone who has abused over-the-counter cough medicine containing dextromethorphan (DXM) to get high. Many teens say they abuse this medicine because it is easy to get – they can get it out of their medicine cabinet at home or purchase it themselves.

To help fight teen over-the-counter cough medicine abuse, the Five Moms’ allies U.S. Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) reintroduced bi-partisan legislation in March 2013. The Preventing Abuse of Cough Treatments (PACT) Act (S. 644) would prohibit the sale of over-the-counter cough medicines containing DXM to anyone under the age of 18.

How can you make a difference in the fight to protect minors from medicine abuse? Submit a pre-drafted letter to your local U.S. Senators urging them to co-sponsor the PACT Act! Don’t forget to share with your friends and family and encourage them to do the same!
