Talking with Your Kids About Medicine Safety

Remember when your kids were small? You baby-proofed every corner of every room of your home. Now that your children are older, there are still things you can do in your home to help keep your kids safe. One important area to take a look at is your medicine cabinet. Without question, medicines serve an important need. Medicine helps us feel better and take better care of our kids when they’re sick. Still, it’s important to know which medicines are in our homes and how much is in every bottle or box. Knowing exactly what and how much medicine is in your home will put you in a position to monitor the use of cough medicine in your house. And take the act of safeguarding your medicine cabinet something you can share with your kids. Talk to them about what you’re doing. Be clear that you do not want them taking medicine without your knowledge. Teach your teens and younger children to respect medicines, and make sure you share what you know about the risks of abusing cough medicine.
